How to Participate in the Academic Commons

AASHE's Academic Commons aggregates educating for sustainability materials from across the sustainability community.

Contributing Your Materials

Anyone can participate by providing course materials related to educating for sustainability in higher education. The course material submission includes an open-ended, rich text field for submitters to provide context, information, usage suggestions, and other tips in as much detail as they prefer and attach it to their submission. Please note: An AASHE Account login is required to upload materials.


Supported Files

Course material file attachments are supported in the following formats:
  • PDF
  • Microsoft Word documents
  • Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
  • Powerpoint presentations
  • text files
  • image files (PNG, JPG, GIF)
  • OpenOffice Document formats

Case Studies Content

In addition to curriculum materials, the Academic Commons includes curriculum-related case studies curated by AASHE staff and volunteers through interviews with figures in the educating for sustainability community. If you have a suggestion or would like to be featured in a future case study, please email our resources support address: resources @ aashe.org.

AASHE 2012: Investing in the Future will be held October 14-17 in Los Angeles, home to more than one million college students. This year’s conference features a new advanced session track, local campus tours, curriculum and STARS workshops, and presentations by L. The Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles is AASHE's general attendee hotel, with $177 pre tax rates. Students receive $99 pre-tax reservations at the student hotel. Hosted by the College & University Recycling Coalition (CURC) with support from AASHE, this
September 13 webinar will take a detailed look at the challenges and solutions specific to campus composting. Participants will hear from industry and collegiate experts about the technologies and systems being used in successful dining hall composting programs, and learn about the challenges and solutions specific to special event composting programs.

USGBC Greenbuild 2012 International Conference & Expo
AASHE is a sector partner for the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC)

AASHE is expanding its professional development offerings for higher education faculty and staff. As a newsletter subscriber and a recent AASHE conference attendee, your input will be highly valuable to our work of building new workshops, retreats and online resources.

2010 pricing for AASHE 2012 will be offered June 1-8. Don’t miss out on AASHE 2012,

Accepting Applications: AASHE 2012 Awards Program
AASHE invites applications for its
2012 sustainability awards. AASHE will present four Campus Sustainability Case Study Awards, one Student Sustainability Leadership Award, two Student Research on Campus Sustainability Awards and one Faculty Leadership Award. All winners will be announced at the AASHE 2012 conference and will be featured in Sustainability: The Journal of Record. Applications will be accepted through July 2.

AASHE has been working on its branding and will soon unveil new AASHE and STARS logos. We’ve taken a very close look at how our organization functions, the purpose it serves, and the best way to communicate who we are with the higher education community and beyond. This
webinar will share the details of the branding process, from concept to implementation, as well as how the new brand will affect STARS Institutions. The webinar will take place 2 p.m. Eastern, May 29. RSVP for this event.
Academic Impressions Webinar: Creating a Bike-Friendly Campus Culture
Best for those institutions that are still in the foundational stages of developing a campus-wide alternative transportation strategy, this
Academic Impressions webinar will take a step-by-step approach to creating a bike-friendly culture on any campus using Duke University (NC) as an example. Supported by AASHE, this event will start with basic initiatives including bike racks, bike storage rooms and bike maps, and move into deeper investments like developing effective town/gown relationships. The webinar will take place 1 p.m. Eastern, June 6.
Webinar Recording Available: “How to Establish and Maintain an Eco-Rep Program”
AASHE was pleased to co-host this informative webinar with National Wildlife Federation on April 18. A
recording of the webinar is now available, as well as a written transcript. The webinar celebrated AASHE’s and NWF's joint publication, “Student Sustainability Educators: A Guide to Creating and Maintaining an Eco-Rep Program on Your Campus,” by Dr. Christina Erickson, Sustainability Director at Champlain College.
